Drenthe means peace, space and enjoying healthy forest air. As adults, we have more than enough of that; after all, holiday time is meant for de-stressing. But whether peace and quiet captivate your children is very much the question. Children want to romp around and have something to discover. They want to experience adventures.
Walks through the Drentse woods are ideal for this. There are many well-signposted walking routes and you can always find points of departure for a discovery or puzzle tour. Do not miss the Strubben-Kniphorst forest, where children can learn about the oldest history of the region. This unique forest is the only archaeological reserve in the Netherlands.
Camping in Drenthe means an active holiday
The Strubben-Kniphorst forest is part of the extensive nature reserve of the Drentse Hondsrug, in which Camping de Bergen is also situated. Early history comes to life here. Just imagine: neanderthals settled here 100,000 years ago and hunebed builders left their mysterious traces at least 5,000 years ago.
Two of these typical Drenthe burial monuments are still standing in the woods. And if you look carefully during the walk, you will soon discover the burial mounds that lie here. The highest of these bears the sinister name of 'Galgenberg' (Gallows Mountain). There are also clearly visible cart tracks running through the nature reserve that is on the UNESCO heritage list. All the ingredients are present for an exciting and educational walk for the youngest explorers. That is what is so special about Drenthe: you can lazily de-stress, but also actively holiday with the children.
Drenthe is open for children
One of the biggest attractions of Drenthe is of course the as yet untouched nature: forests, heathland, fens, streams. You can wander endlessly. One nature area deserves a special recommendation: the Fochteloërveen, on the border of Drenthe. It is an impressive 'empty' area, the last high moor in Europe. Special animals live there and rare birds brood. Take the children to the watchtower 'de Zeven', or to the bird-watching hut.
The attraction of nature in Drenthe is that the various areas are easily accessible to the public. And what the children will find at least as pleasant is that you will regularly come across pancake houses, where you can recover from the walk and satisfy your appetite. Drenthe is truly open to children in all respects.
From petting zoo to amusement park
The fact that Drenthe is distinctly child-friendly is also demonstrated by the many attractions that are geared to the perception of children. From petting zoo to amusement park, Drenthe has it all. It is not for nothing that the provincial motto is: Drenthe does something with you. And that goes for young and old. Recommended are: Kabouterland in Exloo, Theodore's Wooden Path, Sprookjeshof amusement park and the petting farm in Roden. And no doubt we'll skip a few more great attractions or sights.
Oh yes, close to our campsite there is a great amusement park where your children can play to their heart's content. That is, if they still have the energy to do so after trying out all the playground equipment at the campsite. Don't forget to book your camping holiday in Drenthe early!
