The history of Gasselte

The name “Gasselte” probably comes from the Germanic word “gastel,” which may be an indication of an elevation in the landscape, possibly a hill or wooded area. In the Middle Ages, Gasselte was an agricultural community, where agriculture and cattle breeding were the main economic activities. Today, Gasselte is a quiet village with a mix of historic and modern amenities.

A well-known figure in the village was Wemeltje Kruit (Gasselte, September 1, 1887 - Assen, September 27, 1963) She was a merchant woman and a striking village figure, who was called Wemelie.
