Camping De Berken is only 4 km away from the center of Gieten. This makes it an ideal location for a quiet vacation in nature, while still being close to the amenities of the village. You can easily reach the center by bike or car, and enjoy the beautiful Drenthe countryside along the way.

The history of Gieten
Gieten is located in the eastern part of the province of Drenthe. The name “Gieten” has a Germanic origin and means “goat” or “pour,” referring to a stream or watercourse. This suggests that water played an important role in the early history of the settlement. This area was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological finds of burial mounds and urn fields from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Today, Gieten is known primarily as a picturesque village surrounded by the Drenthe countryside and offers plenty of recreational opportunities for hikers, cyclists and nature lovers.
Activities for tourists in Gieten
In the charming village of Gieten, there is plenty to do for both young and old. For example, you can visit the beautiful mill “Hazewind,” located in the heart of the village. When the mill is open, you can buy fresh pancake flour here, a fun and authentic souvenir of your visit.
For a nice walk, we recommend the Gnome Trail in the Zwanemeer forest. Although the path was created especially for children, adults will also enjoy this atmospheric route through the forest.
On a hot day, you can cool off in the outdoor swimming pool Het Zwanemeer. This pool offers fun for the whole family and is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sun.

Walk around in Gieten
The hiking trail starts and ends at Oude Groningerweg 18 in Gieten. You will walk through the Breevenen water catchment area, part of Drenthe's “blue gold” - naturally pure drinking water. This area protects drinking water sources and provides a rich habitat for special species such as the sable grasshopper, marsh harrier and skylark. The water-rich ditches and ditches in the valley of the Hunze provide a varied nature and make it a beautiful setting for a peaceful walk.

Shops and market in Gieten
In the village you will find a wide range of stores. In addition to the supermarkets Lidl and Jumbo, there is also a bakery, butcher, drugstore, HEMA, Action and various specialty stores. On the Stationsstraat you will find Kaaskoperij Gieten, a delicatessen store with various types of cheese, salads and delicious drinks boards. In the adjacent building is the Gieter Slieter, where you can choose from more than 300 types of specialty beer, wines, whiskeys and other beverages. At Steenkamp 6 is Antiquefarm Story, where you will find not only antique furniture, but also mirrors, lighting and home accessories.
Every Thursday there is a small market on Station Street from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

In Gieten you can choose from several dining options, whether you want to have lunch, dinner or take-out. For Chinese-Indian food, visit Chinese-Indian Restaurant Palace at 113 Stationsstraat, which also offers take-out. On the same street is Jimm's, where you can dine with a wide choice of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. On Asserstraat is Casa Mia, an attractive Italian restaurant with a simple menu. The pizzas are made according to family recipe and are known for their thin, crispy bases. For a delicious lunch in a relaxed atmosphere, visit Bakkerij Job, where freshly baked sandwiches and homemade delicacies are on the menu. Opposite the Jumbo you will find Ice Cream Parlor Toscana where you can enjoy a cup of coffee on the terrace in addition to Italian scoop ice cream.
