The history of Borger
Borger also known as Hunebedcity, has a long and interesting history dating back to the early Middle Ages. Borger is the Hunebed Capital of the Netherlands and is located on the N34, also known as the Hunebed Highway. The name “Borger” is first mentioned in writings from the 12th century as “Borchinghe.”
The village is probably named after an old Germanic word meaning “settlement near the swamp,” which could refer to the geographical location of the area. One of the most famous historical sights of the village is hunebed D27, on the same grounds you will also find the “Hunebed Center”.
Tourist activities Borger
On a rainy afternoon you can do just fine in the swimming pool of the Hunzedal. At De Drift 3 you will find not only a 25-meter-long competition pool for swimming laps, but also a recreational pool with rapids. There are also two paddling pools, a whirlpool and a sauna. Swimming is also possible at the outdoor recreational lake. In the Hunebedcentrum at Hunebedstraat 27, you can view an exhibition about hunebed builders. It is a multimedia tour with more than 200 stories about the grounds.
In addition, you can walk through the Primeval Park, the Keientuin and take a look at the largest hunebed in the Netherlands. If you want a walk among the tops of the trees, you can visit the Boomkroonpad (with the Woodpecker Trail). Various hiking and cycling routes start at the Boomkroonpad Outdoor Center. Near the outdoor center is also a play forest for children: Lorken.

Borger is a rich village in terms of stores. There are branches of Blokker, Bruna, Etos, HEMA and Kruidvat, among others. Borger has 3 supermarkets; Albert Heijn, Boni and the Aldi. Besides the regular supermarkets, Borger also has a health food store, the Ieme on the Hoofdstraat. And a cheese and delicatessen store De Kaasbank, also on the Hoofdstraat.
Of special note is Hunebedcity, a shopping village in Borger's former town hall, located next to the village church in the center. And while adults can stroll from store to store, children can have fun in the play cave. Lovers of wine, champagne, port or prosecco can visit the tasting room of MIBO wines. At Brinkstraat 6 you will find wine from different wineries. Including wines from Weingut Otto Görgen from Germany (Mosel), Champagne Tribaut Schloesser from France (Champagne) and Vitalonga from Italy (Umbria).
