the history of Rolde
History of Rolde: Esdorp met Rijke Tradities
Rolde, one of the oldest ash villages in Drenthe, has a history dating back to prehistoric times. The village was an important settlement, as evidenced by the proximity of two impressive dolmens (D17 and D18), which served as Stone Age burial monuments. In the Middle Ages, Rolde was the administrative center of Drenthe. Rolde's Gothic church from the 14th century, once a regional religious center, still stands as a landmark in the village. Until the 19th century, Rolde had a prominent role as a meeting place for the provincial government, before Assen took over this function.
Today Rolde reflects a rich combination of historical and archaeological value in rustic, natural surroundings.
