While some have sworn by their camper vans for years, others prefer to head out in caravans. How do you make the choice? And what is the best choice for a holiday in Drenthe?
Caravan or motorhome?
In 2020, our country had over 427,000 caravans and 139,500 motorhomes. Whereas for many years the caravan had the upper hand in our country, in recent years there has been a clear rise in the number of campers in the Netherlands. In fact, the number of campers has doubled in the past five years. Whether you are better off choosing a caravan or a campervan depends entirely on your situation. Every advantage of a motorhome is often a disadvantage of a caravan, and vice versa. That's why we list advantages of both.
The advantages of a caravan
One of the advantages of a caravan is that it is often cheaper to buy. You also don't pay road tax for it. The biggest other advantage of a caravan is that once you arrive, it often acts as a holiday home. You install your caravan and then you can easily take the car. Ideal for those who like to go out by car during their holidays.
The disadvantages of a caravan
The disadvantage of a caravan is that it is not allowed to go as fast on the road as a motorhome. Also, your car must have enough towing power, but of course this depends on the size and weight of the caravan. In addition, many people find driving a caravan more difficult than driving a campervan. Another disadvantage is that a caravan takes a bit longer to install than a motorhome. A caravan is therefore mainly suitable for those who stay longer in one place. But of course, that too is relative.
Advantages of a motor home
One of the biggest advantages of a campervan is that it is a house and car in one. This gives a huge amount of freedom. Everything you need is within easy reach. A campervan is quickly installed and the same speed limit applies on the road as passenger cars. That means you get to your destination faster than with a caravan.
Disadvantages of a motorhome
The disadvantage of a campervan is that it is more expensive to buy. Road tax also has to be paid for this. And don't forget the compulsory MOT. In addition, you are less mobile than with a caravan, as your camper is also your car. So do you want to visit something that is not within cycling walking distance? Then you will have to pack up the whole motorhome again. Many people with a campervan therefore always stay at a campsite for a few days and then move on. But a good pair of bicycles can go a long way.
